I found today's night call to be quite interesting. Cos xl and L were on call. And we were all covering level 3. I was constantly at the surgical wards because the medical wards were full. And I would hang out with xl everytime i bump into her. Makes my night call less sleepy cos i got someone to talk cok with. :)
Passed by L like 6 times the entire day. Interesting cos we would never fail to give each other the weird look.
Night call is fun when have constant brushes with friends. Not when u are working alone.

My new life

I actually enjoy going to work.

The word is Actually.

When i was in year 5, Medicine just seemed disgusting to the core.

Gives me nausea and vomiting ++.

Now that Im a working lady, im starting to gain new insight into this issue altogether.

Medicine as an academic subject is horrifyingly unlikeable- You just dont seem to get it.You just dont seem to like it.

On top of that, life of a med student in the ward is largely upsetting too- You just dont fit into the ward; always getting in the way; always troubling the the docs by begging for cases.

The above might be true- but Medicine as a career is vastly different!!!!

You make many new friends, you meet many new people, you receive many acts of kindness by many people in the course of ur work. But the main reason is- you get money every 25th.

The hours might be crazy, time for social life might be cut down, however I do not mind at all, as everything in the ward makes my life more interesting.

I love the new friends i made in ward 2. My fellow HO robert, the 4 MOs that i always talk alot to, esp shirley and soo whom i seem to click.

The acts of kindness by fellow HOs on call eg alvin just makes you wanna cry. He would help me out in cases every single time he is free. Even fellow GS HOs on call who bump into me helped me do passives! HOW touching!

I forged many new friendships with the nurses- even the dao-est nurse in my ward is now my friend!

The Year 3s are very cute. Though i always pretend to be dao, i actually dont mind them disturbing me.

Everything in the ward is interesting- ranging from the flirtatious GS reg, to the cute old patients-chia sing herg and sinnaya whom u used to take care of in sip.

Guess what? I'm finally back in singapore!

And it takes some time before everything gets back to where it used to be.

For instance, im running by london clock. I dont wake up before 6pm and dont sleep before 4am. Dear me! Though im dying to get outta the house to catch up with my friends, im facing the problem of not being able to wake up in daytime.

And im sweating every living moment! Oh my god! It is the first time im perspiring in like a month.

And Im eating REAL FOOD. It sure feels funny to be eating such good food every meal. Yu pian mee fen...rice dumplings (my mama made rice dumplings! You're welcome to come to my house!)

And i drove today. Sure feels weird. Ahbor the car doesnt seem to recognise me, neither do i recognise him.

While a part of me is relieved, another part of me yearns to go back.

You can see the King's college chapel. Chee how, the hero of the day, was our tour guide in Cambridge. He studies there you see, and he brought us around to see the architecture. There are numerous other beautiful colleges. Did I tell you that people in cambridge like to sit on the grass. No, its not like in Singapore, where you'll get lallang, mimosa, pricky stalks and mud sticking to your butt after sitting on the grass. There, the grass is carpet grass. So you can even roll around, bury your face in the grass and still emerge clean after standing up.

Here, KZ the other hero of the day with us in the photo. He brought us to his hall dinner, which reminded me of Hogwart's dinner in harry potter. They actually wear this gown for their daily hall dinner! Zhng right! Wah, i felt i graduated that day. Show u the photos another day.Dying after a day at cambridge. On the train back to london.

It took us half an hour to hike up Arthur's seat, an extinct volcano within walking distance from our home.

The hill rises above the city of Edinburgh to a height of 251 m, provides excellent panoramic views of the city, is quite easy to climb, and is a popular walk.

I tried to find out the story behind Arthur seat, but there are so many different versions online.

One version says its name stems from a little-known legend that King Arthur watched his army's defeat of the Picts from there. And the possibility that King Arthur might be Scottish instead of English.

"Legend tells of a kingly man who pulled swords out of stones, protected England and eventually sent his men to quest for the Holy Grail. But what if this interpretation is all wrong?

A number of authors down through the ages have suggested that Arthur - this most English of heroes - was in fact from Scotland.

Most of the battle locations have Arthurian names: Arthur's Craigs in the west of Lanark; Arthurshiels Farm, north of Biggar; Loch Arthur in Dumfries, and so on to Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh."

Another version says it is probably named after a local hero who happened to bear the name Arthur, rather than any connection with King Arthur.

The Urquhart castle sits beside Loch Ness along the A82 road, between Fort William and Inverness, close to the village of Drumnadrochit.

In 1446, Sir William St Clair, 3rd Prince of Orkney, founded this Chapel to spread intellectual and spiritual knowledge, and to ensure his place in heaven. He wanted to thank the gods for giving him such a prosperous life. At that time and era, average life expectancy was 35. Yet Sir William was 50 years old at that time.

The Chapel itself took some forty years to build. However, what we see today is only one part of a larger scheme. Excavations in 1800s uncovered foundations stretching a further 30m beyond. The beauty of the Rosslyn Chapel was astounding.
Every carving, every pillar has a story to tell.
You'll be surrounded by an aura of mystery and magic once you step into it.
Every surface of the Chapel is carved in an outstanding display of craftsmanship.Beautiful stained glass.

An ancient form of bungee jumping? Nah, it’s the fallen angel Lucifer.
Along the arch above the window there is a beautiful carving of the maize or the Indian Corn. It originates from North America, a country traditionally thought to have been discovered by Columbus in 1492, almost 50 yrs after Rosslyn Chapel was built. Could these carvings of the Corn be proof that the Knights Templer reached North America before Columbus?
There are several angels with their musical instruments. One is playing the bagpipe. Bagpipes appeared in Scotland from the mid-1400s and this is one of the earliest images of this instrument.

You can see a row of cubes coming out from each of the angels playing the musical instruments. The carved cubes that protrude from the ribs and arches are special. Each one is unique, carved with individual symbols. Various theories suggest that these represent musical notes or keys to a secret code which so far remains undeciphered. Some say that the day this code is deciphered, is the day where all the mysteries of the Rosslyn Chapel are unveiled. This carving shows the Dance of Death. In the Dance of Death, 16 characters from different social background are each accompanied by Death, represented by a skeleton. Symbolising death’s inevitable triumph over life, the scene is typical of medieval interest in mortality, at a time when average life expectancy was 35. This is the Green Man. One tourist who had nothing better to do, once counted the number of Green Men in the Chapel. The answer is 110. The vines sprouting from its mouth represent nature’s growth and fertility.
The Mason’s Pillar
The Apprentice Pillar.

There are 8 carved dragons winding around its base. In Scandinavian Mythology, 8 dragons sit at the roots of the Yggdrasil tree, an ash tree which bound together heaven, earth and hell with its branches. Perhaps this represents the St Clair family’s Norse roots.

The story goes that the master mason working on Rosslyn Chapel carved The Mason’s Pillar. Before attempting to carve another pillar, the mason decided to travel abroad seeking inspiration from similar designs. In his master’s absence, the apprentice driven by a dream carved the pillar himself- The Apprentice Pillar.

When master mason returned and saw the masterpiece which the apprentice had created, he flew into a jealous rage and struck the apprentice on his forehead with a mallet, killing him outright, there and then in the Chapel. The master was hanged for his crime.

Master Mason’s head. The head is carved in a location of the Church which makes Master Mason look in the direction of the Apprentice Pillar- as a punishment he deserves. The apprentice's grieving mum.

This is a set of seven scenes showing figures carrying out good deeds. They are called the Seven Virtues. Helping the needy, clothing the naked, looking after the sick, visiting prisoners, displaying greed (*), feeding the hungry, burying the dead.
7 sins. Pride, gluttony, charity (*), anger, envy, sloth, lust.

You may think that displaying greed is not a merciful act, and indeed it is one of the seven sins which appear on the reverse of this slab. Greed has been swapped with charity. Did the mason make a mistake, or is this a reminder of the potential for good within evil, and evil within good?
The ceiling is divided into 5 compartments, each with a different motif: daisies, lilies, roses, simple flowers and stars. The different flowers show the Chapel’s theme of nature on a grand scale, but also carry other layers of meaning. Lilies and roses are associated with Virgin Mary. Some of the motifs also relate to the Knights Templar: lilies were reputedly carved over the entrance to the Temple of Solomon where the Order was founded.

Hidden amongst the stars are 4 angels, a figure of Christ raising his hand in blessing, a sun, a moon and a dove.
In the centremost point of this picture, there is a pointy "keystone" on the ceiling. It is said that when you drop a line from this stone, it intersects the place in the hidden vault where the Holy Grail is kept. It is said that there is a vault below the Chapel, which is as tall and as wide as the Chapel. Many centuries ago, people did visit the vault. However for reasons unknown the entrance to the vault is sealed and hidden.

An airless room, dank, dark, silent.

Where no life exists for the gloom of it all was too much to bear.

This is as confusing as the blueprint in prison break, so you gotta concentrate.

To get from our apartment to the outside, you'll have to get through 3 doors (namely 1, 2, 3). All 3 doors are self locking (can be opened from the inside, not the outside). The system here works this way: The Western Gen (cheesie and huili) girls hold one pair of keys, while the Royal Infirmary girls (yiqing, ahma, clara and i) hold one pair of keys. The last person in each group to leave the house will hold that pair of keys. Today, it so happened that my clinics start at 10am. So I was the last person to leave the house, still lazing in bed by 9am. Just then, yq rang the doorbell from outside door 3, and spoke thru the telecom.

yq: Huiting huiting! I forgot to bring my phone!
ht: *in a daze, just climbed out of bed* Yar..yar..ok...ok...i help you bring to school...
yq: how about you open the door for me? i come up and get.
ht: *in a daze* ok...ok...(press a button for door 3 to be opened.)
(opened door 1. Door 1 slammed behind her. Opened door 2, saw yq outside door2 and passed her the phone. ht walks back toward door 1, while yq ran toward door 3.)

It is lucky that yiqing hasnt exited door 3. Coz I was in my pyjamas, not wearing specs, no money, no keys, not holding any phone. If yq had left, I would have been locked out till 6pm, when everyone came home! We tried to call huili, but she didnt pick up her phone initially. So yq gave me her phone, and i hurried her to go to school while i waited for huili's call. Huili eventually called and went "Dont move! Stay where you are! Im coming home to save you!"

And I was trapped at "home" (refer to floorplan) for a whole 40min, in my pyjamas, no keys, no specs, no phone, no money.

It got kinda scary when I heard footsteps outside door 2. Shit man, I thought. Who's coming in? Neighbour? Or serial killer? Die lah!!!

He turned out to be the postman, who threw a letter in thru the letterhole of door 2.

I had a sudden urge to murder the person who came up with self-locking doors.

(The TP work harder than those in singapore. If you park illegally, you will 99.99% get booked. We met 2 TPs 4 times, during the 2 times we parked.)

Heaven is really a place on Earth.

Weekend getaway- 500 miles roadtrip in Scotland,
on a MANUAL 1.6L Kia Cerato,

with Huili being the hero of the trip.

The queen named this view Queen's view. Huili named it Baba's view.

As we drove from Inverness to Aberdeen,

we were constantly surrounded by breathtaking fields of gold.Among the daffodils...Why are there so many, songs about rainbows?
And whats on the other side? Never-ending green pastures.

Lesson learnt: Horses dont eat bananas.

I would definitely rent an AUTO car and bring my papa, mama and jiejie on such a roadtrip. I think my mama will like the scenery!

This trip is certainly a milestone for all 5 of us (23-year-old-no-longer-kids-now-adults). Eternally grateful to my uncle and auntie for showing the 3 of us photos, narrating anecdotes, giving us confidence and convincing us that such a roadtrip was possible! Thanks for helping us plan the route (had to make a last minute long distance call to singapore to consult uncle on the route). If both of you were here, the trip would have been 100x more interesting!

13 hours of flight from our sunny island to 11 degrees celsius London, 7 hours of stoning in Heathrow airport, one and a half hour of domestic flight, arriving in FREAKING N-I-N-E DEGREE CELSIUS Edinburgh, joining the 4 other girls in the new apartment, grocery shopping, it is 1140pm in Edinburgh now, and there is not a single strand of energy in me to say anything for this entry. So, please kindly conjure your own captions ah.

The essentials you ought to know when you go to Edinburgh is, first and foremost, how to pronounce the word Edinburgh. My whole life, i have heard at least a dozen different pronounciations, like "Edin-burg" or "Edin-burr" etc .....the correct pronounciation, as locals pronounce it, is, "Edin-bRur" or to some "Edin-bRar". Heh.

The second thing you need to know is the scottish flag. There was this guy doing a survey at the airport. He gave us 6 flags to choose from and we chose everything but the actual answer. The first flag we chose was the UK flag, and it is the thing Scottish hate most. Scottish are not Brits! We defeated the Brits! Malu.

Do you have any idea how to stone for 7 hours? We do!

Txl and I are into this streptococcal project as part of our paeds electives. And trust me, it is a path of no return. One fine day, both of us actually stayed in the paeds office from 6pm to 6am doing data collection on 37 thick case files. Being reminded of weiqin's wise words, "Thou should always make your efforts recognised (to our tutor)". So I actually planned to appear in front of Dr Ch*ng's office, slouched in the arm chair with both legs propped up on one arm rest, hair deliberately messed up, and on seeing Dr Ch*ng, going, " SO, Dr Ch*ng, how was your night? Oh mine was great. The paeds meeting room was kinda cold, though."

But in the end I hum cheed.

Once we had to clerk 16 cases for her tutorial on monday and being utterly fearful of her, we went to the wards on a SUNday. And once again weiqin advised us to make our efforts recognised. So we planned to keep mentioning the word SUNday in our conversations with Dr Ch*ng. "So, Dr Ch*ng, how was your SUNday? Oh mine was great. The wards were quite packed. Oh did I tell you, I came back on a SUNday?"

But in the end we hum cheed, again.

That day, Dr Ch*ng asked us whether we want to present at the ASM next year. And being hum chee, I went "We dont mind!"

Dr: Actually you can actually present your findings at the ASM next year. Do you want that? (Obviously a rhetorical question)
Me and txl: *look at each other*

Just love hanging out, watching cartoons (meet the robinsons, we both liked it! ), and shopping with amanda :)(havent gone out with her in a while)! We saw alot of nice bags, shoes and clothes (i esp love those at gg5 and 9west!!!! amanda found very nice bags and clutches at aldo and warehouse!!!).

BUT I had to hold myself back SO many times because the thought of London's accomodation being so expensive totally deterred me from spending a single cent on shopping. For several times, I had to put the pretty top or shoe back onto the rack, rather reluctantly. (Everytime I'm holding a 9west shoe, I think to myself: You can sleep 2 more nights in London. Then i will promptly return the shoe, no matter how perfect it looked on my foot. :( :( :( :( ) For the first time in my life, I came back from shopping empty-handed. :( :( :( :(

Yesterday went to yiqing's house with huili to discuss our trip to edinburgh (3wks electives), london (4-5days travel) and paris (3days travel). While accomodation in edinburgh had been settled early on, we only started research on london's lodging these few days, and to our absolute horror, it is super expensive. Gosh. Cheapest is 80 SGD per person per night (en suite). Sleep there 1 night i can add one gg5 shorts to my wardrobe, or get two aldo bags. Man, i'd rather sleep on the streets. Help, anyone know of lodging less than that? We gotta book the next couple of days.

Ok. That's it. Im changing my destination to Kazakhstan, and no more shopping for the next 1 year.

Once again, I am damn proud of myself.

I drove the girls to chomp chomp for supper from cck!

Did I mention it took me one and a half hours to get there?

You know, a couple of wrong turns, here and there.

I havent seen the girls for 3 months and I really really miss them, i really do!

The highlight of the night is me, blurting out, "Didnt you say that MY ***** IS *****?!!?!!!" in the middle of a very crowded Al Azaar. It just sounded very, Very wrong. Instantaneously, my face turned as red as a beetroot, rather, as red as ang ang the SSS. I wanted to dig a hole in the ground and jump in.

And 3 months saw alot of changes. Drastic changes. Like having found a job, like having graduated, like having bought new phones, even acquiring ang ang the new SSS (suzukiswiftsport).

After getting my life back following 3 months of torture (exams), the world has changed drastically without me knowing.

I was on maggie's blog the other day, and reading the second most recent blog. And found it really funny. So I was laughing my head off for quite a while.....it was then that I looked at the date.....December 19th 2006.

And it hit me that I was laughing at a joke that was 3 months old.

Today I drove to east coast park from cck! So proud of myself. But tell you a secret, promise me you wont laugh. I went onto ecp (changi airport) by mistake and reached the airport! Seriously! Reached as in we really saw the control tower. Haha. Me and ahma were like "we can go edinburgh now".

I love wearing blades cos it gives me the cheap thrill of feeling taller. Haha.

Had dinner at Melvados with a few of my cg mates.

Laughed till my TMJ hurt yest night,

Freak. Where have all the non-ridiculous blogskins gone when i needed them most? After combing thru 9742 blogskins on www.blogskins.com, ive come to the conclusion that there are only 2 types of blogskins. (1) the geena and absolutely embarrassing blogskins which do not, in any way, match up to my atas image and (2) the neutral ones (like this), but which must often be destroyed by irrelevant words splattered across the page.

Like who will find "please bring a kite to my picnic" relevant to their lives? When designing a blogskin, for goodness sake write something generic right? Something universal, something which everyone will nod in unison, like "i love cute guys" or "o&g was tough" or "shit now i have to start mugging for patho".

Oh and check out this collage of the love(s) of my life. Ahham, my ex-crush edison, liver (yum i can eat 15 lobes of liver at one go), furry animals, me as a baby, myself, myself and more of myself. The greatest love of my life is still myself lah actually.

Malaysia, truly Asia

The most impromptu trip ive gone for; i only learnt about the destinations a day before; even so they had to depend on the unpredictable weather (either malacca+cameron or malacca+south thailand); we didnt book any transport or lodging in advance. But the 3 guys seemed to know what they were doing so i didnt worry a bit. I was thinking, what can get worse than sleeping in the streets for a couple of nights with roaches right? *shrug shoulders nonchalantly* Big deal! (Erm, not really. *shudder in regret*) This trip is a real roadtrip cos 50% of the time was spent on the road. The previous few days in S'pore, it rained incessantly but on that very day we set off the clouds cleared for us. All was bright and sunny from s'pore to malacca until we saw...

Church of melaka History lesson: Malacca was founded by Parameswara , a Srivijayan prince who left Sumatra in1396. One night, we laughed at something that was really nothing for almost an hour and ended up only clocking 2 hrs of sleep.

We realised that we missed the only bus that travels from malacca to cameron highlands each day, so we took a bus to KL instead. And from KL, we took a bus to cameron highlands. Abyss of no return.

The 2 and half hour journey up cameron was so treacherous that i didnt dare sleep. It was pitch black from 7-9pm and the driver had to high beam around corners. I didnt take any photos on the way up. These were taken on the way down.There were too many abysses of no return and narrow lanes. I wouldnt wanna know what happened to the vehicle that hit this.Puke bag anyone?

We finally reached cameron highlands at 9pm, and there was really a nice weather. 18 degrees celsius. Checked into Kang's travellers lodge. Rm 20 (?) per night. According to lonely planet, there are bed bugs there. Heh, I dunno wats up with me man. Ive been addicted to youtube surfing. All anaesthesia's fault. I got so bored studying for anaesthesia test last thursday that i had to surf youtube, and now I cant seem to stop! And its the hols now, which gives me more reasons to continue surfing.
